Banbury got the boost of an early goal when they scored in the 12th minute, albeit there was some fortune about it. Emily Parker hooked the ball into the centre from the edge of the Wantage penalty area down the right with the ball then bouncing in front of the home custodian and up so high on the firm ground that it found its way over the keeper into the top corner of the net.
As the half developed further it became an equal affair. Banbury went close to doubling their lead in the 22nd minute when a corner from the right taken by Rachel Dunbar fell to Josie Clark on the edge of the six yard box but under pressure the United stalwart was unable to keep her shot down and the ball went just over the bar. Then Wantage went close to equalising in the 28th minute when a long ball down the left put Ashleigh Wilcox through on goal, the Wantage player taking the ball around the outside of Katie McLean in the Banbury goal only for her shot from a narrow angle to go just wide of the far post.
But Banbury would get the all-important next goal on 32 minutes when a corner from the left taken by Yazmin Holmes was headed home on the edge of the six yard box at the near post by Debbie Andrews.
Right on half time it was 3-0 when Josie Clark crossed into the centre from the right to Jenny Hoggins whose shot from just inside the Wantage penalty area took a slight deflection into the back of the net.
Katarina Poborska went close to increasing United’s lead twice early in the second half, her first effort from the edge of the Wantage penalty area going just wide and a few minutes later a similar distance shot saw the home custodian do very well to push the effort around the post for a corner.
Though Wantage battled well despite the 3-0 deficit it was a relatively quiet second half for regular custodian McLean and also Lynsey Burdock who went from the outfield to have a spell in goal towards the end of the game.
The last ten minutes of the game saw Banbury very much on top. In the 80th minute a cross from the right by Rosie Clark to Andrews saw the United striker’s shot from 12 yards smash against the post before coming out and being cleared.
However, just two minutes later and the fourth goal arrived when Josie Clark shot from the edge of the Wantage penalty area down the right across the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.
