In one of two new player signings on Thursday, Banbury United has announced the arrival of 21-year-old centre back Tai Fleming, who reunites with manager Mark Jones for the second time in his career.
Fleming, joining from fellow National League North side, Kings Lynn, brings youth, versatility, and previous experience at Step 1 and 2 in the non-league pyramid to the Puritans' defensive line.
Fleming's football journey began at Norwich City, where he joined as a 10-year-old before moving to Somerset at the age of 16. It was during his time in the youth setup at Yeovil that he first crossed paths with Mark Jones. Displaying exceptional leadership qualities, Tai captained the youth sides from 2018 to 2020. His talent and dedication earned him four first-team appearances during pre-season, showcasing his potential for a professional career. Despite being released following Yeovil's relegation from the Football League, Jones expressed his belief in Fleming's abilities.
Known for his versatility, Fleming can operate as a centre back, full back, and holding midfielder, thanks to his tactical intelligence and adaptability on the field. After his time at Yeovil, Fleming signed a two-year deal with National League side Kings Lynn. During his first season, Tai featured 21 times for Lynn in the National League before he was loaned out to Step 3 side, Lowestoft Town. There, he made 21 appearances, scored two goals, and was named the Manager's Player of the Year. Upon returning to Kings Lynn, he played a role in the first-team setup, contributing to its promotion challenge in the 2022-2023 season with 16 appearances in defence.
Standing at 6ft 1in, Fleming is eager to build on his experience at Step 2 and fulfil his hunger for first-team football. Mark Jones expressed his delight in reuniting with the talented youngster, acknowledging Fleming's exposure to both the National League and National League North despite his young age.
“Although Tai is only 21, he also has experience in National League and National League North. I have worked with Tai at Yeovil and he’s a talented young player,” said Banbury United manager, Mark Jones.
Banbury United warmly welcomes Tai Fleming and looks forward to his contributions on the pitch as he adds depth and versatility to the squad's defensive options.
