Sadly, we can confirm the reports of the last couple of days that 26-year-old star mid-fielder Josh Smile will not return to the squad this season. Smile was injured in the Vanarama National League North away match at Hereford in January. Since then, he has been undergoing various treatments and medical assessments. Having been advised not to train or play, this week we learned that Josh will have to have surgery on his knee.
“We are gutted not to have had Josh in the team for many weeks now. He is greatly missed. Given the medical advice, the best outcome for him is to have the operation as soon as possible so that he is fit to join pre-season training and be ready for next season. The club supported Josh in getting the scan and analysis he required for ongoing treatment and I know everyone involved in Banbury United wishes him a speedy recovery. I know our supporters have eagerly awaited a progress report for some weeks but Josh’s series of consultations have taken some time leading up to the very recent decision to opt for surgery,” said Ronnie Johnson, Chairman of Banbury United FC.
Oxford-based Josh Smile joined Banbury United in July 2022, having played three seasons with Vanarama National League side Maidenhead United after coming through Fulham’s youth system.
