April 1968 and United clinch the Midland Floodlit Cup with a 3-1 win at Cheltenham Town

Season 1967/68 saw United compete for the first time in the Midland Floodlit Cup, run on a home and away league basis with 10 teams. With many non-league clubs having recently installed floodlights there were many similar competitions like this around at this time as clubs looked to make as much use as possible of newly installed lights.

United’s penultimate game in that season’s competition was away to Cheltenham Town on Wednesday 24th April and jubilant Banbury supporters chaired leading goalscorer Tony Jacques off the field at Whaddon Road as United’s 3-1 win clinched the Cup.

After a goalless first half, it was a classic Jacques header that put United ahead in the 58th minute. On 66 minutes Colin Holder headed home Jim Cassidy’s cross to double the advantage and just a minute later, Jacques fastened onto a faulty back pass and shot past the advancing goalkeeper to make it 3-0. Though Cheltenham pulled a goal back, United comfortably held on to clinch the Cup.

The cup was presented to Banbury at the Spencer Stadium on Tuesday 21st May before United’s game against Oxford City in the Smith’s Memorial Cup. Below is a photo of United captain Roger Darvell receiving the Cup from Fred Deeley, the Chairman of the Midland Floodlit Cup competition.

Banbury’s 18 games that season saw then win 12, draw 2 and lose just 4 to finish with 26 points, three points clear of runners-up Worcester City.

The final league table is shown below:

United scored 40 goals in the 18 games, with Tony Jacques getting 18 of them. Other goalscorers were Colin Holder 8, Robin Scott3, Peter Svenson 3, Richie Ward 3, Roger Darvell 2, Cyril Green 1, Barry Sansom 1, Own Goal 1.

United played in all competitions an amazing 73 games this season! Jim Cassidy and Roger Darvell played in all 73, Tony Jacques and Paddy Page in 72, Pete Svenson in 70 and Colin Holder in 69. Tony Jacques scored 62 goals in all competitions, a club record for a season which with fewer games being played today is unlikely to ever be broken.

The club also competed in the Midland Floodlit Cup the following season when they finished in mid-table. Though that was the last season United featured in this competition they would go on to compete in various other midweek floodlit league competitions up until the late 1970s.

Whilst the club does not have a team photo for season 1967/68, here are three “Player of the Week” articles from the local press featuring Jim Cassidy, Tony Jacques and Roger Darvell who all made over 70 appearances for the club that season. Note the articles were written the previous season. There is also a scan of Banbury United player profiles for that season which appeared in the Worcester City v Banbury United programme for the Southern League game played on Saturday 11th May 1968. City were already confirmed as Division 1 Champions but United rather spoilt the party, winning 2-1 and no surprise Jacques got both goals for Banbury!
