Sad news that Ian, a former player, has passed away

The club was deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Ian Richardson, a local lad who played as a winger for Banbury United in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Ian joined Banbury United from Easington Sports for season 1969/70 and would make his debut, playing on the left wing, in the second game of that season, an away Southern League Division 1 game at Bedford Town. His first goals for the club would come in November of that season when he scored two goals in a 4-0 home FA Trophy win over Potton United. That first season would see Ian make in all competitions 27 appearances and score 9 goals. Ian would go on to have another two seasons with Banbury United, in his three seasons making in all competitions 119 appearances, scoring 21 goals.

The Richardson family has a rich history of providing wingers for the club as Ian’s brother Ken played in that position for Banbury Spencer in the early 1960s, making eight first team appearances as well as many for the reserve side. His uncle Geoff, also a winger, made a total of 67 first team appearance for Banbury Spencer over eight seasons in the 1950s and like his nephew Ken, many appearances for the reserve side.

The club would like to send their sincere condolences to the Richardson family at this difficult time.
