Banbury United

Banbury United, under the guidance of new manager, Kevin Wilson, are on a mission to break free from a challenging streak of five consecutive defeats. Wilson, undeterred, emphasized that there are still 11 cup finals to navigate and a substantial 33 points to contend for. Despite the recent setbacks, back-to-back home games against Southport and Boston United on Tuesday night can offer the perfect time to pick up much needed points in the season.

The Tuesday night clash against Rushall Olympic added to Banbury's woes, ending in a 2-1 defeat. Banbury went 1-0 down early in the first half before a Ken Charles penalty on the stroke of half time brought Banbury level. Halfway through the second half, Rushall had a penalty of their own, dubiously, which the Pics dispatched calmly. Liam McDonald’s side saw out the rest of the game bringing all three points back to Dales Lane.

This encounter held immense significance, with Banbury situated at the bottom end of the table. As a consequence, Banbury find themselves in 22nd place after Tuesday's results, intensifying the pressure on the squad to climb out of the relegation zone.

In terms of team news, Aidan Elliott Wheeler remains suspended, creating a void that the team must adapt to. Wilson has indicated that more new players may arrive imminently.

Southport: Ascending from the depths

In contrast, Southport has been on a more positive trajectory, having accumulated seven points in their last five games. This commendable run places them in 18th position, providing a comfortable five-point buffer above the dreaded drop zone. The team's recent triumph on Tuesday night against Warrington, securing a resounding 3-0 victory, showcased their prowess. Bennett, Carver, and Anson contributed to the goal tally, with Matt Carver's strike marking his entrance into double figures for goals in the league this season.

Jim Bentley’s side seems to be riding a wave of confidence, and their solid performances indicate a team that is steadily moving away from relegation danger. The upcoming clash against Banbury United serves as an opportunity to further solidify their position and continue their stint.

Previous encounters

History favours Banbury United in their encounters against Southport. The past three meetings have all ended in victories for Banbury. Last season's clashes resulted in a 3-1 triumph at home and a 2-1 victory away. This season, a closely contested battle saw Banbury emerge victorious with a slender 1-0 score line. Notably, Ken Charles' penalty secured the win, and a crucial last-minute save from Jack Harding ensured that Banbury claimed all three points.

As the teams prepare to face each other once again, the backdrop of previous successes for Banbury adds an intriguing narrative to the upcoming match. Can Southport break the pattern, or will Banbury's historical dominance prevail once more? The answers will unfold on the pitch in what promises to be a compelling clash between these two teams.
