Having drawn 0-0 at the Spencer Stadium with fellow Southern League Division 1 side Hastings United on the previous Saturday, Banbury would have to endure a five-and-a-half-hour coach journey down to the South Coast on Wednesday 10th February 1971 for a Second Round FA Trophy Replay game.
Banbury defended exceptionally well, under some pressure, in a goalless first half. With Hastings pushing forward at the start of the second half, the Banbury forwards found themselves with plenty of room on the counter attack and just before the hour-mark they exploited this and took the lead. Ray Ball down the left flicked on a long clearance from goalkeeper Stewart Rennie to Tony Foster who then lobbed it over the advancing home custodian. Ten minutes later and right winger Alan Hellyer, pictured above in the match report header, drove the ball home to make it 2-0.
Six minutes from time and the 20 faithful Banbury supporters behind the Hastings goal were in ecstasy as Hellyer scored again to seal the victory and earn the Puritans a home Third Round, last 16, game against non-league giants and Southern League Premier side Hereford United,
