Tiverton had slightly the better of the opening to the game but it would be Banbury who would go ahead in the 15th minute when a throw in from the left taken by Matt Peake-Pijnen to Ravi Shamsi on the edge of the Tiverton penalty area saw the home defence fail to close the Banbury player down and he had time to pick his spot and fire the ball past Martin Rice into the bottom corner of the net.
Tiverton though responded well to going behind. In the 18th minute a free-kick from Owen Howe from a central position just a couple of yards outside the Banbury penalty area was well saved by Jack Harding. Two minutes later a cross from the right by Nick Hurst went right across the six yard box but no Tiverton player could get a touch to knock the ball home.
Tiverton dominated the next period of the game but Banbury worked their way back into the game and they would make it 2-0 right on half-time. James Richards who had only just come on as a substitute lost his footing inside the Tiverton penalty area down the left and Shamsi nipped in to get the ball and pass across into the centre where Jefferson Louis had the relatively simple task of knocking the ball home from close range.
Banbury began the second half well and it looked like they had made it 3-0 on 54 minutes when a cross from the right by Charlie Hawtin was headed into the net by Louis from 12 yards but the referee had seen an infringement, presumably a push, and it was disallowed.
On the hour mark, a free-kick from just outside the Banbury penalty area saw a Banbury defender deemed by the referee to have handled the ball as he blocked the shot. Howe made no mistake converting the spot-kick.
Just four minutes later and Tiverton were level when a low cross from the right was struck home by Callum Hall from 15 yards.
Tiverton dominated the next few minutes but Banbury held out and worked their way back into the game. In the last 20 minutes it was a game that looked it could go either way. With a quarter of an hour to go Howe shot just over from the edge of the Banbury penalty area and then with seven minutes left Ricky Johnson headed the ball on from midway inside the Tiverton half to Conor McDonagh but the United striker couldn’t connect properly with his shot from a narrow angle down the left and the effort went wide.
So the teams will meet at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium on Tuesday to decide which team progresses to the Second Qualifying Round.
